The first Advent Fair at Clervaux Farm Shop proved to be a tremendous success and a shining example of the social enterprise spirit at the heart of Ruskin Mill. Strategically opening on a Sunday, Darlington’s highest footfall day because of the town’s light switch-on and firework display, enabled us to welcome a brilliant number of visitors. The atmosphere was warm and festive, with mulled apple juice, Christmas cake, and mince pies enjoyed throughout the day.
This alignment of timing, community engagement, and celebration contributed to the shop achieving a record day in both footfall and sales. More importantly, the event showcased to Darlington the depth and quality of the work we do at Ruskin Mill and the meaningful impact our students and participants make.
Rise participants, who rotated responsibilities with confidence and enthusiasm, fully supported the shop, making coffees, sharing craft stories with visitors, and representing Clervaux with pride. A highlight of the day was Isaac, who thoroughly enjoyed being recognised from the front cover of our new Rise brochure.
In the atrium, Lone and Chris reported excellent engagement from stallholders who appreciated the support and interest in their handmade products. Meanwhile, Sarah, our pottery and “everything craft” magician, delighted families with festive wreath-making and pottery sessions. These activities not only brought joy but also gave visitors a hands-on introduction to the creative experiences offered at Clervaux.
The craft shop performed exceptionally well, with over 70 handcrafted items made by Clervaux Risers sold in a single day, reflecting both the quality of the work and the strong community connection formed through the event.
Overall, the Advent Fair stood as a powerful demonstration of Ruskin Mill’s values: craftsmanship, community, and the transformative potential of social enterprise. It was a day filled with pride, participation, and a shared sense of purpose, setting a wonderful precedent for future events.
