A student at Glasshouse College has recently achieved a fantastic milestone, completing his first metalwork piece with staff support. It is a hook made from 10mm square bar.
The student saw the project through from design to completion; he collected tools, set up the forge, operated the bellows, and carried out the metalwork. He has decided to mount it on wood and will make a couple more hooks to practise the same technique again, deepen his understanding of the process and techniques he has been learning, and become more independent with each step.
He has been working with letter punches to mark his name on his work, trying to sequence the letters, apply the right amount of force, and measure where to place them.
