Glass Beadmaking provides students with the opportunity to develop traditional and contemporary beadmaking techniques at the flame, including lampworking, kiln-annealing, colour blending, and surface decoration.

The craft nurtures artistic growth and confidence, evolving hand-eye coordination and problem solving. Students develop fine motor control for intricate bead shaping, tool handling, and design application, as well as gross motor skills through posture and movement within the workshop.

In learning to melt, wrap and successfully shape hot glass into a bead, students work meaningfully with gravity, rhythm and the three planes of space. Students gain proficiency in working with molten glass, manipulating heat and tools with precision, and designing unique beadwork pieces such as earrings, bracelets and necklaces, beautiful items of service for self and others.

It’s been an exciting start to our new glass bead making workshop, where students are exploring the vibrant and intricate world of lampwork techniques. The group are already showing a great deal of curiosity and creativity, experimenting with dots, swirls, and basic shaping techniques to create unique and personal pieces.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this workshop is watching students quickly grow in confidence— starting to master the torch, developing control over the flame, and beginning to understand the rhythm and patience required in lampworking. Even at this early stage, they’re producing beautiful results and are eager to refine their technique further.

Dan has successfully learned to work with the torch to create his first glass bead, overcoming his initial uncertainty and fear of not achieving, and showing real determination and growth in the process.

This hands-on experience is not only developing student’s technical abilities but also encouraging a strong sense of focus, craftsmanship, and artistic expression. I’m looking forward to seeing how their individual styles evolve as they gain more experience with this captivating process.
