Interview with K
“This is my first term of forging. My tutors are Abigail and Dan. This is my first hook made at the forge, made with steel. My tutors showed me even someone with no experience can still produce professional looking goods.
I am hoping that soon some of the forged things I make can be sold in the farm shop. Let me give you a little sense of the forge in a short description. I enter the forge with the sense of no sound. Then, ten minutes later, there is a blazing fire, the sound of metal being hammered- bang, smash as the metal is hammered into the anvils, then put back in the blazing fire to get back up to over 1000 degrees. There is the sound of slightly cold metal being bent and shaped into masterpieces.”

K explored both blacksmithing and green woodworking, creating a forged steel hook and hand-turned honey dippers. Through practice, K’s skills and confidence steadily grew, inspiring hopes of one day selling his work in the farm shop. Together, these projects celebrate imagination, dedication and the value of learning through making by hand.
“Here is a photo of my hand-turned honey dippers. They are made out of ash wood using the skew chisel and the roughing out gouge. As I’ve made more of them, I have got a lot more experienced and improved them to be more suited for the job. I’m hoping to be able to sell them in the farm shop in the near future.”
