Therapies at our Colleges

A holistic approach to therapies

At Ruskin Mill Trust’s colleges, therapies are woven into our unique Practical Skills Therapeutic Education (PSTE) curriculum. This holistic approach integrates land-based and craft activities with therapeutic practices to help each student overcome barriers to learning, build skills, and contribute to their community.

At Ruskin Mill Trust’s colleges, therapies are woven into a unique educational method called Practical Skills Therapeutic Education (PSTE). This holistic approach integrates land-based and craft activities with therapeutic practices to help each student overcome barriers to learning, build skills, and contribute to their community. Rooted in the insights of Rudolf Steiner, John Ruskin and William Morris, PSTE recognises each learner’s individuality and uses meaningful, hands-on experiences to support their development across physical, emotional, social, and cognitive domains.

Specialist therapeutic input is embedded through the Seven Fields of Practice, particularly in the areas of Therapeutic Education, Holistic Support and Care, and Holistic Medicine. Therapeutic Education supports students through age-appropriate activities and applied sensory integration, fostering wholeness and progression. Holistic Support and Care complements this by developing everyday living skills and promoting healthy life processes, especially for students in residential settings. Holistic Medicine offers a range of therapies to support health and wellbeing, guided by the Student Study process — a collaborative assessment that can involve practitioners, support staff and nurses.

These therapies are not standalone interventions but are integrated into the daily PSTE curriculum. Students might receive movement-based work such as Eurythmy, artistic therapies such as painting, or hands-on activities that enhance coordination, emotional regulation, and resilience. Through biodynamic gardening, craft workshops, and social enterprise, therapeutic principles are brought to life — giving students real, measurable outcomes for their work, while nurturing confidence, social skills, and a sense of belonging.

This integrated therapeutic model supports each student’s journey towards greater independence, self-worth, and the ability to positively contribute to society. By combining skilled care with meaningful activity, Ruskin Mill Trust’s colleges create an environment where education, therapy, and personal growth go hand-in-hand, enabling students to re-imagine and realise their full potential.
