As a provision of Ruskin Mill Trust (Independent Education provider and registered charity), Argent College is a post-16 special needs college in Birmingham offering a person-centred approach to holistic learning by role modelling positive relationships in the fields of arts, crafts, commerce, agriculture, nutrition, living skills and the environment. Argent College placements are offered on a day basis, for 36 weeks of the year.
Students at Argent College each have a unique timetable that is developed out of their Education, Health and Care Plan and informed by their individual needs and interests. The practical craft activities and work on the rooftop urban micro farm help students to develop essential work skills, which they can later apply in one of the many on-site social enterprises. The small group work, problem solving and creativity help students to develop social skills, self-confidence and self-awareness.
Through the Practical Skills Therapeutic Education curriculum, students develop the work and living skills they need to lead fulfilling lives and be able to contribute to their local community. The renowned Hive Café and Bakery and the Heritage Centre at the college both provide valuable opportunities for students to develop their work skills and job readiness before transitioning to their next steps.
This approach enables young people with learning differences to progress through our measurable three-stage pathway:
1. Overcoming barriers to learning
2. Becoming skilled
3. Contributing to community
The acquisition of craft skills, taught by tutors who are skilled in the craft, enables the young person to improve and develop executive functioning such as gross and fine motor skills, mental problem solving, functional skills, independent working, planning and execution of work in a practical manner. The curriculum encourages students to gain social and communication skills, self-confidence and independent living skills in preparation for transition into adulthood.
